Civil Construction for a 230 kV Green field Substation , Delivered Two Weeks Early
Burford’s Construction successfully executed the civil construction scope for a new greenfield 230kV substation in North Carolina. The project carried a high-priority critical path milestone for first power delivery, requiring precise schedule management and seamless coordination across two separately awarded contracts.
Work began with the clearing and grubbing of a densely wooded site, accompanied by the installation of perimeter erosion control measures to prevent sediment from reaching an adjacent environmentally sensitive stream. Following site establishment, Burford’s civil construction team executed a complex and compressed scope of work, ultimately achieving turnover for substation construction two weeks ahead of schedule.
The civil scope of work included construction of two (2) sediment basins and a 24-foot retaining wall; 40,000 CY of import fill and mass grading; stormwater management system installation; and erosion and sediment control installation throughout.
A significant challenge during construction was managing an abnormally high volume of rainfall events. Burford’s team successfully maintained continuous water conveyance off-site, while ensuring all sediment remained contained within the limits of disturbance (LOD), protecting the surrounding environment and maintaining regulatory compliance.
