In 1945, Floyd and Opal Pike launched Floyd S. Pike Electrical Contractors with a single truck, six men and a contract from Duke Power. Floyd led work in the field while Opal ran operations from home, managing finances and even cooking for crews. At the time, Duke Power needed contract line crews to help electrify the country. Pike Electric landed its first job with Duke Power that year, and the relationship endures to this day. From this modest start, a company was born—one that would come to define resilience, ingenuity and deep-rooted commitment to community.

The postwar boom brought opportunity, and Pike was ready. The company invested in mechanized equipment that allowed smaller crews to handle bigger jobs and take on more complex projects across the Southeast. Underground distribution and transmission work became new specialties, and Pike built a growing reputation for quality, safety and dependability. What began at a kitchen table was quickly becoming a regional force as Pike laid the groundwork for decades of service in an expanding electric power industry.

As Pike’s operations expanded, so did its mission. Floyd Pike played a pivotal role in advancing legislation that empowered rural electric cooperatives to bring power to underserved communities. These efforts strengthened grid access in some of the most remote areas of the Southeast. Pike was not just growing a business; it was helping transform daily life for thousands, deepening its purpose and its connection to the communities it served. Pike’s response to Hurricane Betsy in 1965 resulted in industrywide awareness of Pike’s reputation as the top storm-response team in the Nation.

By the early 1970s, Pike was managing large-scale transmission and substation projects across multiple states, and suburban expansion was proceeding at a breakneck pace. But the oil embargo from 1973 to 1975 had a very negative impact on Pike’s utility customers, and consequently, demand for work drastically decreased. And in 1975, Floyd Pike’s sudden passing brought a moment of reckoning. His son, Joe B. Pike, stepped up to lead during one of the company’s most difficult periods. Under Joe’s hand, Pike stabilized and weathered the downturn, emerging from hardship with renewed focus and prepared for a new chapter of growth.

With Joe at Pike’s helm, the 1980s brought resurgence. Pike expanded into Kentucky and Georgia, grew its fleet of specialized equipment to 1,200 pieces and purchased a right-of-way company in Georgia and an electrical contractor in Kentucky. The company’s value increased tenfold. A pivotal moment came in 1989 when Hurricane Hugo struck: Pike responded with every available crew from the Carolinas to West Virginia. The response was swift and earned national praise, cementing Pike’s reputation as the gold standard in storm response.

After helping to rebuild Florida after Hurricane Andrew’s devastating impact in August of 1992, Pike began working closely with Florida Power & Light and building a strong Florida presence. Amid the rapid growth, Pike defended a major Duke Power contract in a competitive bid among 14 competitors, reaffirming its industry leadership. As longtime employees retired, a generational shift began. J. Eric Pike, grandson of the founders, joined the company and insisted on starting in the field, learning the business from the ground up as a lineman. In 1998, Eric became president, carrying forward his family’s legacy with a deep respect for Pike’s culture and a fresh vision for the future.

As more and more sophisticated technology began to be deployed to the grid, the company needed to make investments in new capabilities, particularly information technology, security, engineering and cellular telecommunications. In 2002, Pike partnered with private equity firm Lindsay Goldberg, gaining capital to fuel long-term expansion. Over the next several years, Pike acquired numerous companies, building union strength in the Southwest and launching one of the nation’s largest power engineering platforms. In 2005, Pike went public. In just three years, the company had doubled in size and emerged as a national player with deep operational range.

Emerging from recession, the 2010 acquisition of Klondyke Construction expanded the service territory into the Southwest and reinforced Pike’s engineering, procurement and construction services. Pike expanded into the West by acquiring Pine Valley Power in 2011. In 2012, Pike acquired UC Synergetic and expanded engineering operations across most of the continental United States. In 2014, Eric Pike led a go-private transaction, returning the company to private ownership and enabling the company to refocus on its customers, culture and long-term growth. A focus on profitable relationships and the acquisition of PowerSecure’s transmission, distribution, substation and engineering segments in 2019 provided a launching pad for continued growth.

A record-breaking 2020 hurricane season resulted in Pike restoration crews being deployed to 15 states, from Texas to Connecticut, to get the power back on in the aftermath of hurricanes Isaias, Laura, Sally, Delta and Zeta, with four of the storms requiring more than 1,000 people to be deployed. At the height of the response to Laura, the most destructive of the hurricanes, Pike had three times the number of linemen as the next largest contractor. Acquisition of electrical contractors PowerTown Construction and Mesa Line Services in late 2021, along with right-of-way-focused Burford’s Construction in 2022 and a leader in transmission and substation engineering and project management expertise with United Grid Solutions in 2024, Pike continued to strengthen all aspects of utility customers’ potential needs. In 2023, James R. Wyche was named chief executive officer, and Eric moved to the chairman role. In late 2025, TPG acquired a majority interest in Pike with a view to work with James and the management team to support the impending growth. With over 12,000 employees generating less than $3 billion in revenue, Pike continues to be a natural leader in designing, managing and constructing the country’s energy infrastructure.
